Impact Talks Speaker Guide

Getting your session and recording right.

Impact Talks is a leading platform for leaders, fundraisers, and innovators in the field of telephone fundraising across the globe.

United by the common question, “What's next for telephone fundraising?”, our mission is to provide actionable insights and knowledge to our delegates, empowering them to make a significant impact in their work.

Recognising the need for a dedicated space for professional development and networking within the telephone fundraising community, we envisioned a hub where professionals could find inspiration, access best practices, and connect with like-minded peers to share insights and learn from each other.

As a speaker, you are a source of inspiration to others, and this guide is designed to assist you in delivering your 10–15 minute pre-recorded presentation, followed by a Q&A session.

We are cultivating a community for passionate fundraisers with a focus on long-termism and omnichannel fundraising. We aim to foster collective growth.

In this guide, we share our best practice approach to delivering the 10–15 minutes of pre-recorded video for your session.

Our philosophy is simple – if we help you shine, we shine too. So let's embark on this journey together and create an unforgettable event!

Your Presentation

Our conferences are unique in that they take place primarily on screen and we edit all sessions, requiring a distinct approach compared to traditional in-person events.

Presentations are not performed live; we request speakers to pre-record their talks and we post-edit to make the experience similar to the theme of the event.

This method has several benefits:

Checkmark
It eliminates the risk of technical glitches and the ubiquitous question, “Can everyone hear me?” And no need to worry about doing the presentation on the day, focus on the Q/A instead.
Checkmark
It allows the flexibility of multiple takes. If you veer off-topic, you can easily record a second take and perfect your talk. Feel free to send it all, we will edit it down for the session.
Checkmark
It gives you the freedom to move away from your desk and narrate your story or include other voices. Feel free to add B-roll and graphics so it all melds together well.

We advise against using slides in the presentations you record. If you’d like to include graphics, just send them separately to us and we’ll merge them with the video. While images and video clips can be effective, storytelling on-screen can be achieved more engagingly without slides.

Filming Techniques

Filming styles for Impact Talks can range from straightforward without any elaborate setup, where most of the talk is a direct address to the camera, supplemented with a few edited clips, proving simplicity can be compelling.

Checkmark
When recording try to place yourself with eyes like the following visualisation.
Checkmark
Try positioning yourself so that light from the window is falling on you evenly, ideally from in front of you. Try to avoid having any bright lights – especially windows – behind you.
Checkmark
Make the camera look directly at your eye level, not up from the desk or down from above.

Admittedly, putting together a pre-recorded presentation requires more effort on both your and our part - the result tells its own story. However, the high-quality, thoughtful storytelling resonates with our audience, ensuring your work reaches thousands of eager learners.

Going Live

While the presentations at Impact Talks are pre-recorded, we prefer to follow each presentation with a live Q&A session, typically lasting around ten minutes. This interactive segment allows delegates to engage with you, enhancing the overall event experience. Joining us “on stage” is straightforward, with the primary considerations being a reliable internet connection, a quiet space, and appropriate lighting. We will send you a specific speaker link for the event directly.
